Paul Merson runs the rule over Chelsea's Premier League season
Paul Merson says a lack of concentration in the Chelsea squad led to their disastrous 2015/16 Premier League season.
The Blues made a woeful start to the defence of their top-flight crown which led to Jose Mourinho’s sacking in December.
Interim manager Guus Hiddink managed to steady the ship but the Dutchman couldn’t guide the Blues into the European places.
Italy head coach Antonio Conte is set to take over the reins following this summer’s European championship in France.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson, who is a self-confessed Chelsea supporter, described it as a season to forget for the west London side.
“Many people expected Chelsea to be up there defending their title under Jose Mourinho, but it didn’t quite go to plan,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“It’s been an incredibly disappointing season for the Blues during which Mourinho lost his job. They’ve been poor all season and the concentration just has not been there from the players. Definitely a season to forget for Chelsea.”
Chelsea won their fourth Premier League title under Mourinho in 2015 after easing to a comfortable top-flight triumph.
The Blues made premature exits in the Champions League and the FA Cup under Hiddink in the second half of the season.
Conte won three successive Serie A titles as Juventus manager.
